David Gray - Shine Guitar Chords

How to retune to Open Chords

This article is designed to help you to retune your guitar to open chords to play the following songs:-
  • Flesh
  • Shine
  • Flame Turns Blue
  • Living Room
The Open E tuning requires the 6 strings to be tuned to the notes EBEG#Be from top to bottom on the fretboard. The only strings we need to change are the 5th, 4th and 3rd as the other three strings are the same as standard tuning (EADGBe).

Note: The thickest string is the 6th string and the thinnest string is the 1st string
  1. Tighten the 5th string so that it matches the pitch of the 6th string at the 7th fret (B)
  2. Tighten the 4th string so that it matches the pitch of the open 6th string (E)
  3. Tighten the 3rd string a little so that it matches the pitch of the 4th string at the 4th fret (G#)

Now when you play all the strings open you should hear a nice sounding E chord. Now for the first song I recommend Shine as that is the easiest, it only uses two fingers to fret!

Now that you have the guitar tuned to an Open E chord to get to any other Open chord is easy just place the capo on the desired fret. For example, to get to Open G which is another commonly used Open chord just place the capo on the 3rd fret (3 semi-tones up from E). Flame Turns Blue is in Open G but this one is a little harder than Shine.
