David Gray - Jools' Annual Hootenanny 31st Dec 2001

Jools Holland, the piano jazz virtuoso who's show has been running for years, hosts his Hootenanny show to see the new year in every year. The show spanned the new year, starting at 11:55pm and ending at 1:25am, what better way to see in the new year?

As for Dave and the gang , they played an absolute blinder, the audience loved them. After entering with a shocking pale blue suit, they opened with Babylon(Predictable) to which Clune was stroking a stuffed reindeer!?. A comment was made by a celebrity about Clune, he said "The drummer is very colourful, brings some colour to the David Gray". Another called our man "Dave Gravy".

A few more acts later (some quite boring) and David was back with the concert version of Please Forgive Me, in which the audience were clapping along after some persuasion from David himself on the old piano. Clune was on form as usual and in a colourful shirt (but not a Hawiaan one).

This was the end of the Dave songs and 10 mins later he was back with a drink and a change of clothes from the garish suit. Jools Holland wished him Happy New Year and asked him for some predictions for the year to come. David came out with "An unexpected outbreak of world peace" which was a breath of fresh air from some of the other guests comments.

Marc Almond, from Soft Cell fame and the author of Say Hello, Wave Goodbye sang the original version in it's old 80's camp style. It has to be said that this song has lost it's original sparkle since Dave covered it and reworked it. I'm sure he thought he was in a show, waving to the lyrics and reaching out.

The finale was a wonderful version of My Sweet Lord with Dave on male lead and Beverly Night on female lead, absolute class. Doesn't David look strange singing with no guitar!?
