013, Tilburg, Netherlands - 27th/3/03

My husband and I arrived in Tilburg at 17.30 hrs. We walked by the venue 013 and a few people (approx. 8) were already standing/sitting in front of the door. About 18.10 hrs we took our place in the line. Just a small crowd were standing in front of the door. Finally the door opened at 19.03 hrs We all went to the entrance of the hall. Again this door was locked. Eventually somebody came to open the door and all of us ran to the stage. The people who were in front of us took their place in the centre of the front row, they thought.(he, he) So we took our place at the left side of them. These people were standing right in front of the formation of the support act but they didn’t realise that.

The support act, which started at 20.00 hrs, was done by Aqualung. Also a british group. Unfortunately a lot of people were not listening to Aqualung because they were talking through the music. It’s my opinion that this is very rude. It’s a lack of respect. In the beginning when DG wasn’t famous, he also played support acts. Aqualung played for half an hour. Much to my regret I must confess that I can’t remember any titles of the songs they played. But the songs sounded great.

At 20.30 hrs the roadies cleared the stage and removed all instruments of Aqualung. Then the roadies build up the formation for David Gray. It took the roadies almost half an hour to put everthing in the right place. We were so fortunate because DG stood right in front of us. He couldn’t be any closer. It was our lucky day!!!! At 21.00 hrs. David, Dave, Tim, Rob and Clune finally came on stage. The crowd yelled, cheered, applauded and they were in for it.

DG opened with Say Hello and Wave Goodbye which happens to be one of my favourite songs. At the end of the song he improvised. I did not recognize the lyrics. But It was fantastic, great, marvellous ect, ect, ect. The next song he played was Dead in the water. Of course he ended with Please forgive me. In between he played the following songs of which I can’t remember in which order he sang them.

Say Hello and Wave Goodbye
Dead in the Water
My Oh My
Everytime
The Other Side
Nightblindness
Freedom
Everytime
Kangaroo
Silver Lining
Coming Down
Be Mine
Sail Away
This Years Love
January Rain
White Ladder
Real Love
Babylon
Late Night Radio/Faster Sooner Now
We’re Not Right
Easy Way to Cry
Long Distance Call
Please Forgive Me

Before he started to play the Other Side he was pitching the piano with some kind of jazzy tune and made several comic remarks. He announed the song Babylon by this song starts with tskk, tskk. The crowd gone crazy. DG was in a good mood, made jokes and called us Jolly Tilburgians, thanked the crowed a lot. I think he had a great time too.

He improvised a tune on the piano and lyrics like: “This is the last song” and repeated this line several times (just teasing us) and then Please Forgive Me started.

The crowd was great. Someone threw a little plush pig onto the stage. He could appreciate this and put the plush pig on the thing where you put a guitar in (don’t know what it’s called). Others threw candy on the stage. These were picked up by DG and Clune. We had such a great time but unfortunately the gig came to its end. We wish we could go back in time and experience the gig again, again and again. Since this is not possible we will watch the DVD Live at the Point instead. We can’t hardly wait till the DVD of this tour will come out. At the end of the gig I briefly spoke with David Nolte but I didn’t ask for his autograph and didn’t take a picture of him. (How stupid can one be, it will haunt me till the next opportunity!!!)

This was our first gig and it won’t definately be our last. We discovered DG for the first time in Oktober 2002 while watching Top of the Pops at BBC2. He sang The Other Side and later on he sang an other song, which we think was Please Forgive Me?. We loved the songs immediately. We wrote down the name of the artist. My husband searched the internet for this artist and found a lot of other songs, including all numbers of White Ladder. The next day he ordered the CD ANDAM and the DVD Live at the Point. In the following days he ordered A Century Ends, Flesh, Sell, Sell, Sell and Lost Songs. White Ladder, we bought at the gig in Tilburg.
